What a Winter Heating Contingency Plan Should Cover Before the First Cold Night

A heating plan that only works when nothing changes is not really a plan.

It is a hope.

Winter jobs do not stay static. Fuel availability shifts. Temperatures drop harder than forecast. Equipment needs attention. A well's production characteristics change mid-job. None of that is unusual. What is unusual is having an actual plan for it before it happens instead of improvising once it does.

That is the difference between a heating program and a heating contingency plan.

Why contingency planning gets skipped

Most heating plans are built equipment-first.

Book the heater, confirm the day rate, set the mobilization date. That covers the job as long as everything goes the way it was expected to go.

The gap shows up when something does not go as expected. If nobody has decided in advance what happens next, the crew is now solving a problem live instead of executing a plan that already accounted for it.

This gets skipped for a simple reason: contingency planning does not feel urgent until the moment it becomes urgent. By then, it is too late to plan calmly.

The 7 things a real contingency plan should cover

1. Backup fuel

If the primary fuel source becomes unavailable or unreliable, what is the fallback? This should be decided before the job starts, not discussed for the first time when the primary fuel is already failing.

2. Fuel-switch procedure

If the crew does need to switch fuels mid-job, what is the actual procedure? Who executes it, how long does it take, and what happens to output during the transition?

3. Spare equipment capacity

Is there a backup unit, or a way to add capacity, if the primary heater cannot keep pace? Knowing the answer in advance is different from finding out there is no answer once output drops.

4. Escalation contacts

If something changes on location, who gets called first? Second? This should be a named list, not a general sense that "someone will handle it."

5. Overnight decision authority

Who can actually make a call at 2 AM without waiting for someone else to wake up and approve it? This is where response plans either hold up or fall apart.

6. Minimum water-temperature trigger

At what point does dropping temperature trigger action? Waiting until water is already too cold to be useful is waiting too long. A trigger point defined in advance removes the guesswork.

7. Response-time expectation

If a problem is flagged, how fast should a response actually happen? "As soon as possible" is not a plan. A defined response window is.

Equipment that adapts is not the same as a plan that adapts

True tri-fuel equipment gives a job fuel flexibility at the equipment level. That matters, and it is worth having.

But equipment flexibility does not automatically mean the operation is ready to use it well.

A heater that can switch fuels still needs a crew that knows when to switch, how to switch, and who makes that call. The equipment capability and the operational plan around it are two different things. One without the other still leaves gaps.

A true tri-fuel unit paired with a real contingency plan is a program built for changing conditions. A true tri-fuel unit with no plan behind it is still just equipment sitting on location, waiting for someone to figure out what to do when conditions change.

What a missing contingency plan costs

When conditions shift mid-job and there is no plan in place, problems get solved reactively instead of executed on a plan.

That usually means:

Build this before the proposal is signed

A contingency plan is not something to figure out once equipment is already on location.

It belongs in the same conversation as fuel source, output requirement, and total program cost. Before the vendor list locks, operators should be able to answer all seven of these questions with a real answer, not a placeholder.
