Running propane or natural gas instead of diesel on a 32M BTU heater changes the economics of every winter frac job. Here is how the math works out on a typical Rockies pad.
On a cold-weather frac in Wyoming, the Bakken, or the DJ Basin, fuel is the biggest line item you can actually control. The rig, the pumps, the crew — those numbers are what they are. The heater is where an operator can quietly save five or six figures on a single pad without giving anything up on rate or temperature.
The 32M BTU tri-fuel setup
Our units are rated at 32 million BTU/hr at 97% thermal efficiency and burn diesel, propane, or natural gas — whichever is cheapest and cleanest to land on your location. Most operators default to diesel because that is what the rest of the spread runs on. It works. It is also almost always the most expensive fuel per delivered BTU.
Real-world math on a 5-day frac
Take a typical winter job: 32M BTU heater running near capacity for 5 days. On diesel at recent Rockies pricing, that is a serious daily fuel spend. Swap to propane at bulk delivered pricing and you are usually looking at roughly half the cost per BTU delivered. On natural gas straight off a nearby tap, it is even lower.
What actually changes on location
Nothing about temperature, rate, or reliability. The heater delivers the same water spec. The only real difference on location is fuel logistics — a propane tank set instead of a diesel tank refill, or a gas line tie-in instead of both. We handle the coordination on our side.
When it is worth the switch
