A field photo is better than a brochure. It shows the equipment is not just sitting in a yard. It shows the vendor has been on location. It shows the unit can be staged, connected, and put to work in real conditions. That matters.
But a photo by itself does not prove enough. A picture can show a heater on location. It cannot tell you what the unit was producing, what fuel it was running, how many barrels were heated, how long the job ran, or how the crew responded when conditions changed.
For Powder River Basin operators, that difference matters. Field proof should not just show that a vendor has equipment. It should help answer whether that vendor can hold output, control fuel cost, and keep the job moving when fall and winter conditions start working against the program.
A field photo should start the conversation, not end it
When operators review heating vendors, they usually see the same basic claims. High BTU output. Reliable service. Experienced crew. Available equipment. Ready for winter. Those words are easy to put on a website.
Field proof is better because it puts the vendor closer to reality. A unit on location carries more weight than a polished capability statement. But the photo still needs context. An operator should ask:
- Where was the unit running?
- What basin was it in?
- What fuel was being used?
- What BTU output was required?
- How many barrels were heated?
- What temperature rise was needed?
- How long did the job run?
- What happened when conditions changed?
That is where the real evaluation starts.
What a field photo can tell you
A good field photo can tell an operator a few useful things.
- 1. The vendor is active in the basin. For PRB work, basin experience matters. The Powder River Basin has its own timing, weather swings, fuel availability issues, and logistics. A vendor that has actually worked in the basin has a different starting point than one trying to learn it during the job.
- 2. The equipment is field-ready. A photo can show whether the unit is staged cleanly, connected properly, and operating in the kind of environment the vendor claims to serve. It will not tell the whole story, but poor field setup usually shows.
- 3. The vendor has more than a spec sheet. Spec sheets matter. But heating programs are not run on paper. A field photo proves the vendor has at least put equipment into the work, not just quoted it.
- 4. The job conditions are real. Dust, snow, mud, grade, tank setup, access, fuel location, and weather all shape the job. Real field conditions are harder to fake than marketing language. That is why unpolished photos can be more useful than perfect ones.
What a field photo cannot tell you
This is the part that gets missed. A field photo cannot tell you whether the heater performed the way the operator needed. It cannot prove:
- Actual BTU output
- Fuel burn
- Runtime
- Heat transfer efficiency
- Uptime
- Response time
- Fuel-switching performance
- Crew knowledge
- Total program cost
Those are the numbers and behaviors that matter most. A heater can look impressive on location and still cost too much to run. It can look clean in a photo and still lose output when switched to natural gas. It can be staged properly and still create problems if the crew does not know the equipment.
The picture matters. The details behind the picture matter more.
The questions behind the photo
When a vendor shows field proof, operators should press for the job details behind it.
- 1. What fuel was the unit running? Propane, natural gas, and diesel do not carry the same cost. If the job was running propane, ask whether natural gas was available. If the unit was running natural gas, ask what output it held under load. Fuel source changes the economics.
- 2. What was the actual output? A unit rating is one thing. Field output is another. The operator should ask what the unit was expected to deliver and whether it held that number during the job. This is especially important when natural gas is part of the plan.
- 3. How many barrels were heated? Barrel count gives the photo scale. Heating 50,000 barrels and heating 800,000 barrels are not the same job. Volume changes the fuel math fast.
- 4. What temperature rise was required? A job with a small temperature lift is different from one fighting cold water, cold air, and winter conditions. Temperature rise gives the output number meaning.
- 5. How long did the job run? Short runs and long programs stress equipment differently. Runtime matters for fuel cost, maintenance, and crew performance.
- 6. What changed during the job? Field conditions rarely stay clean. Fuel availability changes. Weather moves. Site needs shift. A good heating vendor should be able to explain what changed and how the crew handled it. That is where field experience shows up.
Why PRB basin experience matters
The Powder River Basin rewards vendors who plan early and understand the work. Fall and winter programs are not the time to discover a vendor cannot hold output, cannot switch fuels cleanly, or cannot respond when the job changes.
PRB operators should look for heating vendors who understand:
- Early vendor-list timing
- Cold-weather readiness
- Fuel availability by location
- Natural gas opportunity when available
- Propane cost exposure
- Output requirements by barrel volume
- Response expectations after hours
- Equipment staging in real basin conditions
This is not about having a truck and a heater. It is about knowing what the job will demand before the job demands it.
Field proof should connect to fuel cost
The best field proof does not just say, “We were there.” It says: Here is where we were. Here is what we ran. Here is the fuel we used. Here is the volume we heated. Here is the output required. Here is why the heating plan made economic sense.
That is the level of proof operators should expect. Because fuel cost is where a lot of heating programs win or lose. If a vendor shows a field photo but cannot explain the fuel plan behind it, the operator still does not have the full picture. If the vendor cannot say what the unit produced on the fuel being used, the operator still has risk.
A good photo should lead to better questions.

What was the unit actually doing? What fuel was it running? What output did it hold? How much water did it heat? What did the program cost? Who answered when the plan changed?
Those answers matter more than the photo. And when fall or winter PRB work is on the board, those answers need to come before the vendor list locks.
