Pipeline natural gas, delivered compressed natural gas and propane each bring a different cost and logistics plan to frac heating. The right choice depends on the location, program size, gas quality and equipment.
Pipeline natural gas
When suitable gas is already available on location, pipeline or field gas can reduce delivery activity and fuel cost. Raw field gas may contain moisture, liquids or contaminants, so availability does not automatically mean it is ready to burn.
CNG delivery
CNG delivery can put natural-gas pricing in play where no pipeline tie-in exists. Gas is compressed, transported to the pad and staged for use. Delivery distance, storage and program volume must be included in the comparison.
Propane
Propane is widely available and has straightforward delivery logistics. It avoids the conditioning questions that can come with field gas, but its total cost should be compared with available natural-gas options at the expected heating load.
Equipment output can change the comparison
Fuel price alone does not determine program cost. Confirm the heater's delivered output on the selected fuel. Reduced output can increase runtime and total fuel use, narrowing an apparent per-unit advantage.
