Search for frac heaters or frac tank heaters and you will find two different kinds of equipment presented as though they do the same job. They do not, and the distinction matters before you request a quote.

Two categories, one confusing label

Frac tank heaters are designed to keep fluid in a tank from freezing or maintain a modest temperature. They provide smaller-scale support on location.

Frac water heaters are built to heat high volumes of water to a target temperature on demand, at the scale a completions program requires. That is a different job with different equipment behind it.

Why the distinction changes what you should ask for

A tank heater may be appropriate for overnight frost protection. Bringing hundreds of thousands of barrels to temperature on schedule is a water-heating program. BTU output, fuel flexibility and runtime matter in ways they do not for tank maintenance.

Instead of asking a vendor what frac heaters are available, ask for delivered BTU output at your required volume and temperature rise on the fuel available at the location.

Questions to ask a heating vendor

Is the equipment sized for tank maintenance or program-scale water heating? What is its output at the volume and temperature rise required? Which fuels can it run reliably? How does output change if the fuel source changes?
