Average Temperature Is the Wrong Number to Plan Your Heating Program Around
A 20-degree average does not mean the job runs at 20 degrees. Here is why overnight lows and wind exposure, not seasonal averages, should size a PRB heating program.

Average temperature is the number that shows up in planning conversations because it is easy to find and easy to compare. It is also the wrong number to size a heating program around.
Equipment does not experience averages. It experiences the actual temperature on the actual night the job is running. And in the Powder River Basin, those two numbers can be very far apart.
Why averages hide the hard nights
An average is a middle point. By definition, roughly half the conditions fall below it.
A program sized to the average is sized to conditions that will be exceeded regularly. Every night that runs colder than average, the heater is being asked to do more than the plan accounted for. Not once as an anomaly, but as a normal part of the season.
That is the structural problem with average-based planning. It does not fail occasionally. It fails predictably, on exactly the nights when heating matters most.
What actually drives heating load
The number that matters is not the seasonal average. It is the delta between the water's starting temperature and the target temperature, under the coldest conditions the job will realistically face.
Cold ambient air pulls heat out of water in transfer and storage, which means the heater is not just raising temperature once. It is fighting continuous loss while it does. The colder the night, the more of the heater's output goes toward holding ground rather than gaining it.
A heater sized for average conditions has enough capacity to win that fight on an average night. On a cold night, it may only have enough to hold even, which shows up as slower ramp times and water that gets close to target but never quite reaches it.
The overnight swing is the real planning number
Daytime temperatures are not the constraint. Overnight lows are.
In the PRB, the swing between a daytime high and an overnight low can be substantial, and jobs do not pause overnight. A program that performs comfortably during the day and struggles at 3 AM is a program sized to the wrong half of the day.
That is why overnight lows, not daily averages, should drive equipment sizing. The heater has to be capable on the hardest part of the cycle, not just the easiest.
Wind changes the math too
Wyoming wind is not a footnote in this calculation.
Wind accelerates heat loss from tanks, lines, and any exposed water surface. A 10-degree night with sustained wind pulls heat out faster than a still 10-degree night, which means the effective heating load is higher than the thermometer suggests.
Ambient temperature alone understates the demand. Ambient temperature plus wind exposure is closer to the real load the equipment has to overcome.
What to size around instead
Sizing a heating program for real PRB winter conditions means asking better questions than "what is the average temperature this month."
What are the realistic overnight lows for the window this job is running? Not the seasonal average, and not the record low either. The lows that actually happen with regularity during that window.
What is the starting water temperature under those conditions? Source water in a cold snap is colder than source water in mild weather, which widens the delta the heater has to close.
How exposed is the site to wind? An open location loses heat faster than a sheltered one at the same air temperature.
Does the equipment have enough output to hit target under those conditions, on the fuel it will actually be burning? Rated output on ideal fuel is not the same as real output on field conditions.
Sizing for the cold night, not the average one
Average temperature is a useful summary of a season. It is a poor basis for sizing equipment that has to perform on individual nights.
A heating program built around realistic overnight lows and actual wind exposure holds up when conditions get hard. A program built around the average holds up until the first genuinely cold night, which is exactly when the job can least afford it not to.
